Indie music, traveling, and reading – these are Pooja Kirpekar’s top three hobbies, our featured Wittypen writer this week. A full-time content specialist at TIC, Pooja has been freelancing as a content writer for the past 5-plus years.

Check out this week’s Q&A as she talks about her inspirations, current reading list, and tips for content writers working in tech, healthcare, finance, and lifestyle domains.

Tell us about your personal and professional journey. How did you end up becoming a content writer?

Since childhood, I have always had a passion for writing. I would spend hours scribbling in notebooks, creating stories, and crafting poems. After graduation, I started my professional journey as a freelance writer, taking on various projects and building my portfolio.

Over time, I found that I had a knack for creating content that resonated with readers and clients alike. I began to specialize in copywriting and content marketing, working with companies in various industries to produce engaging and compelling content.

My passion for writing has led me to becoming a content writer, where I can use my skills to help businesses achieve their goals through the power of words. Writing has always been a part of who I am, and I am grateful to have turned my passion into a fulfilling career.

What do you enjoy most about working as a content writer?

I enjoy many things about my work. One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is using my creativity to craft engaging and informative pieces. Whether writing a blog post, a product description, or a social media update, I am constantly challenging myself to think outside the box and come up with fresh ideas.

I also enjoy the research aspect of content writing, as it allows me to learn about new topics and expand my knowledge base. With each project, I can delve into a new subject, gathering information and insights to create compelling content.

However, the most satisfying part of being a content writer is seeing the impact my writing can have. Whether helping a business bump up its website traffic, educating readers on a particular topic, or entertaining them with a well-crafted story, I find it incredibly fulfilling to know that my words are making a difference. It’s a job that challenges, inspires, and brings me joy daily.

As a content writer who has successfully transitioned to a full-time freelancing career, I have a few tips for new writers looking to pursue this path:

Build a strong portfolio: Before looking for clients, having a portfolio of your best Work is crucial. This will help you showcase your skills and expertise to potential clients. Create a website or online portfolio highlighting your best writing samples in various niches.

Network and market yourself: As a freelancer, you are your brand. Use social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook to network with potential clients and showcase your writing skills. Attend industry events and conferences to meet like-minded people and build relationships.

Set realistic rates: When you are just starting, it can be tempting to accept any project that comes your way, regardless of the compensation. However, setting realistic rates that reflect your skills and experience is essential. Research the market rates and set your rates accordingly.

Be organized and professional: As a freelancer, your communication and work delivery must be professional. Set realistic deadlines, respond to emails promptly, and deliver high-quality work on time.

Keep learning and improving: The world of content writing is constantly evolving. Stay current with the latest trends, techniques, and technologies by reading industry publications, attending webinars, and taking online courses. This will help you stay competitive and continuously improve your skills. Transitioning to a full-time freelancing career can be challenging, but it is achievable with the right mindset, skills, and approach.

Apart from writing, what are your hobbies and interests?

Besides writing, I have several hobbies and interests that keep me busy and fulfilled. One of my favorite hobbies is listening to music. Music helps me relax and unwind, and I enjoy discovering new artists and genres. I also enjoy attending live concerts and music festivals whenever possible.

Another hobby of mine is reading books. As a writer, I must stay informed and inspired; reading is a great way to accomplish this. I enjoy reading everything from classic literature to contemporary non-fiction, and reading helps me expand my vocabulary and develop my writing style.

Travelling is another passion of mine. I love exploring new places, experiencing different cultures, and trying new foods. Travelling also helps me gain new perspectives and inspiration for my writing.

Lastly, please share your favorite book and current reading list.

My favorite book of all time is ‘Wuthering Heights’ by Emily Bronte. The novel is a hauntingly beautiful tale of love, obsession, and revenge set against the wild and rugged landscape of the Yorkshire moors. I was drawn to the complex characters, their tumultuous relationships, and the vivid descriptions of the natural world.

A close second is the ‘Remnants of a Separation’ by Aanchal Malhotra, a profoundly moving and insightful exploration of the Partition of India in 1947. It’s a fascinating book that explores the legacy of India’s partition through the objects and stories left behind by people who lived through it. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in history, culture, and personal narratives.

Currently, I am reading ‘The Testaments’ by Margaret Atwood, which is the highly anticipated sequel to her dystopian classic, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. The book picks up the story fifteen years after the first novel’s events and follows the lives of three women in the oppressive regime of Gilead. I enjoy the author’s masterful storytelling and ability to create a vivid and disturbing world.

I am also reading ‘And Then One Day: A Memoir’, by Naseeruddin Shah. As a fan of his work, I was intrigued to learn more about his life and experiences. The book is a candid and engaging account of his journey from a small town in Uttar Pradesh to becoming one of India’s most acclaimed actors.

I always have a long list of books that I am eager to read, and each book opens up new worlds of knowledge and inspiration.

Writers of Wittypen – Vidhu Bajaj

This week’s featured writer considers Ayn Rand and Charles Dickens as some of her favorite authors. Writing for our Wittypen platform since its inception in 2017, learn about Vidhu’s story as a freelance content writer of over 6 years as she answers some of our writer questions for this week. Make sure to read about her suggestions for upcoming full-time content writers as you scroll down the article.

Tell us about your personal and professional journey. How did you end up becoming a content writer?

I was working with an international law firm as an asset finance lawyer before I switched to writing. The switch happened when I decided to move in with my husband who was posted in a remote location; making it difficult to find a job that matched my experience and education.

Wittypen was one of my first writing clients and I remember joining the team in its formative years. Over the years, it has been a pleasure growing with the team and working with different clients, even though my focus has been on finance and tech, of late.

What do you enjoy most about working as a content writer?

Being a writer provides you with a matchless opportunity to learn. Every new topic is an opportunity to learn and expand your horizons.

Tell us about the domains you work on. Any tips for new writers looking to work on the same?

I have written across several domains, including personal finance and investments, tech, people management, lifestyle, mental health, and even food-related content. However, I tend to focus more on mortgage-based financial products and insurance, as these are closely related to my previous work experience.

My only tip to writers is to never stop reading and growing. Be extremely critical of your work, know that there’s always room to improve, and continue working on that. Irrespective of what you’re charging for a piece of work, give it your best and never compromise on research.

You have been working with Wittypen for the last six years, tell us about your experience working as a writer on the platform.

Working with Wittypen has been fun and rewarding. The content managers I work with are more like friends and even Anshul has been pretty approachable whenever I’ve ever needed any support. Wittypen gave me a chance to work across domains and find my niche over time, and I am extremely grateful for that.

Any tips for new content writers hoping to pursue a full-time freelancing career?

A full-time freelancing career is an oxymoron 🙂 Either you freelance or you work full-time, but I get what you mean and I do have a suggestion – never compromise on deadlines. Working as a freelancer means you need to work more than ‘full time’ and manage your time well to make sure you stay ahead of your delivery schedule.

Apart from writing, what are your hobbies and interests?

My pet Coco tops this list – if he decides to give me some free time, I tend to utilize it for painting and gardening.

Lastly, please share your favorite book and current reading list.

My favorite book – that’s a tough one. I’d probably put down two here – Great Expectations and Atlas Shrugged.

My current reading list is quite haphazard. I am reading Atomic Habits, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind, and The Sense of Style.

Lastly, please share your favorite book and current reading list.

My all-time favorite book would have to be “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. It is a timeless classic that analyzes the themes of ethical inequality and righteousness. The story is conveyed through the eyes of Scout Finch, a young girl in the Deep South during the 1930s.

The book is a strong commentary on human needs and remains relevant even today. I love how the author catches the virtue of childhood and the intricacies of adult life in a subtle way.

As for my current reading list, it’s a combination of fiction and non-fiction. I’m reading “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind” by Yuval Noah Harari, which delivers a thorough overview of human evolution and civilization.

Only a few years ago, I had a regular job in the e-media industry, but I wanted more. I realized that the typical corporate grind wasn’t for me and quit my steady job to become a freelance writer while also pursuing my passion for life coaching.

Tell us about the domains you work on. Any tips for new writers looking to work on the same?

I mainly work in the education, lifestyle, personal development, and healthcare domains. I would suggest new writers read lots of blogs and books on the topics of their interest to widen their horizons. We also learn a lot from our own life experiences that can help us become better writers.

You have been working with Wittypen for the last two years; tell us about your experience working as a writer on the platform.

I love working with Wittypen! I have my writer’s profile on a few other platforms as well, but I find Wittypen to be the best. The work is regular, and often the assignments are quite interesting. Interacting with the content managers and editors is always a pleasant experience. I love how the communication is friendly, free-flowing, and effective. I get to choose the topics I want to work on, and freelancing allows for the flexibility I have always craved while working in a regular job.

What do you enjoy most about working as a freelance writer?

The flexibility and freedom that freelancing offers! I totally love that I get to decide when I want to work and on what topics I want to write about. I don’t have to follow a rigid schedule and can take a break whenever I desire.

Apart from writing, what are your hobbies and interests?

“Let the Universe Lead You” by Richard Dotts is my favorite book. It is about how to work with the universe to manifest what you truly desire. I am looking forward to reading “It Didn’t Start with You” by Mark Wolynn. This book is about inherited family traumas and how we can start healing our families’ painful legacies.

  • Writers of Wittypen –  Merril Diniz

Writers of Wittypen –  Merril Diniz

Writer, musician, and interview host – meet Merril Diniz, our multi talented Witty writer who epitomizes the free and maverick spirit of her beloved Goa.

Scroll down to hear her talk about her motivations, challenges, and experience as a freelance content writer as she answers our questions for this week’s ‘Writers of Wittypen’ story.

“Tell us about yourself – your personal and professional journey.”

I’m Merril Diniz, a full-time freelance writer, blogger, and digital interview host, based out of my hometown Goa. In the past, I have played editorial and communications roles in diverse media, education, and consumer tech platforms, and digital agencies in Mumbai and Delhi. As remote work became an accepted culture around the world, I decided to pursue my first love, writing, full-time.

“What prompted you to become a freelance writer?”

I began writing a diary at age 12. With the encouragement of my parents, I began writing as a way to express myself. Writing also played an important role in my full-time editorial and communications work. But I was never able to dedicate enough time to it. So, there were several drivers attracting me to the freelance writing life.

One, I had a deep desire to grow my identity as a writer. This requires time for introspection, reflection, and honing my craft. Freelance writing gives me the flexibility to experiment without barriers. This journey has just begun, and I am excited to see where it takes me.

Two, I also wanted the freedom to design my own daily schedule 365 days a year!

Three, this shift enables me to actively pursue other passions, prioritize time for family, and friends, and enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

“What are the primary domain topics you work on?”

I’m a writer specialized in creating long-form marketing and PR content for enterprise and consumer tech products/ platforms, which thrive at the cusp of innovation. The spectrum of businesses I have served includes fintech, HR tech, edutech, agro tech, logistics, and digital publishing. My strength lies in deconstructing seemingly complex topics, and making them consumable for a non-tech audience.

“Your tips for upcoming writers looking to work on the same.”

It’s important to build your domain knowledge so you can write in an informed manner. For me personally, my exposure to personal finance concepts, sustainability, consumer tech, entrepreneurship, the education sector, and digital marketing, helps bring context to narratives.

My second piece of advice is to bring empathy into your writing. Understand the mindset, challenges, and lived experiences of the audience that will be reading your content. Then write.

Last but not the least, if you aim to be a full-time freelance writer, it’s important to build a basic financial framework, to make it a sustainable path. Track how much you earn, follow up on payments where necessary and create a budget for yourself. And yes, don’t forget to save and invest, so that your money keeps working for you (even as you sleep!).

“What are the challenges you face as a freelance writer on a daily basis? How do you overcome them?”

The core challenge is when a client or editor is unable to provide actionable feedback. With Wittypen I do not face this issue as editors like Priyadarshini, understand how to break down feedback to make it very focused and specific.

Actionable feedback is important as it brings efficiency and speed to the content delivery process. I believe that actionable feedback is a skill that needs to be cultivated to harness the strengths of a writer.

“Tell us about your experience working as a writer with Wittypen.”

I have been working with Wittypen for almost two years, and it has been an extremely pleasurable, smooth ride. I am grateful to my friend Niki Singh, a marketing professional, who recommended I connect with them.

A key advantage is that the entire content management and delivery process is tech-enabled, which optimizes the experience for all stakeholders. And yet, the process has not lost its human touch.

I find that Wittypen editors also have great respect for writers. Writing is a task that takes up a lot of emotional labor. So, there’s a certain comfort and safe space created, when feedback is constructive, without the risks of things getting personal.

Last but not the least, Wittypen functions in an organized manner. As a writer, this is extremely valuable, as it helps you organize your time.

“Apart from writing, what are your hobbies and interests?”

I moved back to my hometown Goa last year after spending many years away. So, I’m using my time to reconnect with family and friends, and rediscover the beauty and culture of my home state. I do hang out at the beach a lot with my sister.

I now also have the bandwidth to pursue my other love, which is music. I can dedicate time to music practices and performances because I can redesign my day as required.

Other than that, I enjoy learning Portuguese via Duolingo, which leverages AI and machine learning to make learning customized and addictive. The good kind.

I’m also looking forward to ramping up my blogging adventures in the coming year on two of my favorite topics – Women and their relationship with money, and spotlighting sustainable personal care brands.

“Lastly, please share your favorite book and current reading list.”

I am part of the Women On Wealth Book Club, which meets once a week to discuss books connected to women and finances. Two books in particular deeply influenced my thinking. The Psychology of Money helped me rethink my temperament and mindset around investing in the stock market, while The Almanack of Naval Ravikant: A Guide to Wealth and Happiness, propelled me to take the plunge towards the BYOB (be your own boss) lifestyle.

I recently also completed The Tenth Story by Manisha Singh, a compilation of stories of women who powered through tough times with a mindset of gratitude, and decisive action.

I am now reading Goa: A Daughter’s Story, which unpacks 450 years of Goan history.
